Heidi's World

Hello Fashionistas,
Back in the ’80s my husband and I lived in New York City. Being the ADD type that I am, I found it more entertaining and more conducive to my artistic temperament to experience several different career paths. First I worked in an advertising agency, then quickly moved on to take a position at Perry Ellis and finally landed, believe it or not, at General Electric Credit Corp. While advertising and fashion were certainly more up my alley, the glamour of the environments was offset by the paltry salaries. General Electric, on the other hand, paid well and generously put me through their prestigious Leadership Training program at Crotonville. There I learned the most important lesson about being a manager – surround yourself with people who are better than you.
Last month we were privileged to launch Project Runway star Shirin Askari’s debut collection. Over 500 people turned out to see her sensational show at The Fashionistas new home, South Side on Lamar. Together with Dallas’ great fashion show impresario Jan Strimple, my girls Bri Crum and Rachel Courts (Team Fashionista) did a remarkable job pulling off our first big production. Many thanks to Jan and her team, Janet Fresquez, Light Dallas, and to all of our sponsors, interns and volunteers for your generosity and hard work.
We continue to deliver an extensive portfolio of events for your entertainment: A number of you attended the NBA Legends of Basketball party that came to a dramatic end when a tree fell on a transformer and cut off electricity to Equinox. Fortunately for us, we had our security team on hand to ward silent auction looters. Several hundred people poured into Insight Complete Eye Care for their grand opening soiree, and I went home with a chic pair of Fendi sunglasses. Sometimes uber cool events drop in our laps out of nowhere; Erik Madigan Heck, fashion photographer and editor-in-chief of Nomenus Quarterly (at $5,000 a pop it’s no wonder only 10 copies are printed each quarter), together with Acura, Ovation TV and F/D Luxe drew a huge crowd of young and old hipsters.
Still on the horizon are Designing With A Vision, a chic cocktail party at Artemide –my favorite Italian lighting design store, and Savor the Art at TreAmici Prime Steakhouse and Seafood.
Our Fashionistas Two program is picking up steam thanks to the efforts of F2 president Bri Crum. She has hit the road and opened up chapters in Rockwall, Austin and Oklahoma State. World domination is her ultimate goal.
Young rainmaker Jillian Prado recently joined our team as Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
None of this would be happening without the incredible people on my team, all of whom are my betters.
Stay Fabulous,

WHAT'S NEW AT FASHION ON MAIN?
Child's Play: A Children's Fashion Story
February 11 ' May 14, 2010
1901 Main St. Dallas, TX 75201
Hours: 12 ' 5pm Thursdays and Fridays
Child's Play: A Children's Fashion Story
These days, children's clothing is abundant, and reflective of a variety of activities, emerging personalities and developmental milestones, while still being colorful, creative and fun. It is often such an attractive stage of life that it is not only the children's fashions that are carried into adulthood. At what other point in life can one bring tulle, stripes, appliquéd jersey and polka dots together? Today many parents let their children choose their own outfits as they would let them color their own pictures. Yes, we have come a long way from the days of handmade clothing and children being dressed as miniature adults.
This exhibition will allow us to peek through the social, historical lens of the child through time, beginning with the post'Civil War era through the Great Depression. Girls' party dresses, several boys' outfits, and many other children's wear treasures from the Texas Fashion Collection and the private collection of Stephen Porterfield, owner of the Cat's Meow in Midland, Texas, will be featured. We will see children's influence shaping and shifting fabrics and palettes, and casting off corsets and crinolines in the name of Child's Play.
Child's Play: A Children's Fashion Story will be on display February 11th through May 14th at Fashion On Main inside Universities Center at Dallas, 1901 Main Street in downtown Dallas.
Fall 2010 is all about MEN. Men's fashion, of course!

THE FASHIONISTAS host the NBA Legends of Basketball Party
 |
Heather McGowan, Jessica Fulton and Bridget Boggess |
The combination of NBA ALL-Star Weekend and a much-hyped snowstorm gave The Fashionistas’ Legends of Basketball party honoring Moses Malone a heightened sense of excitement. Guests quickly arrived (sporting their chic fur) at the upscale Equinox Fitness Club from all corners of our crowded city: Joyce Goss, with Kenny Goss in tow, stopped by for a little silent auction bidding, followed by Ana Pettus, Dan Pritchett, Janet Fresquez, and Rachel Fresquez with a gaggle of fashionable SMU girls by her side. Just as the party kicked into full swing, with live music by our favorite band, the Boss Level, the ill-timed snowstorm zapped the electricity and the party suddenly become very dark yet decidedly delightful. But alas, a party always has to end, so The Fashionistas eventually had to pack up their Choos and go home an hour early. Don’t worry, The Fashionistas and the NBA Legends of Basketball have something very important in common; we need plenty of beauty rest to put our best foot (or face) forward! Sponsored by Equinox, Doug Boster Catering, Red Bull, Russian Standard Vodka, Stone Brewery and Vapiano. Benefitting the Fashionistas Two scholarship fund.
Insight Complete Eye Care Grand Opening Party
 |
Heidi Dillon, Dr. Ivan Bank, Kelly Bennett, Abi Erickson and Dan Pritchett |
As I walked into the Grand Opening Party of Insight Complete Eye Care on February 19th, I immediately spotted Heidi Dillon sporting what I quickly found out was the newest addition to her sunglasses collection: oversized Fendi frames in jet black. I had a feeling this opening would be a success, and Heidi’s chic shield from the bright lights of flashing cameras that seemed to be stationed everywhere proved me right. Congratulations to Dr. Ivan Bank who smartly stocked his showpiece of an office (3,000 square feet to be exact) with an extensive range of glasses – both sun and corrective, as well as state-of-the-art eye exam technology. Admiring the crowd (it was so packed I never actually got the chance to inch over to the wall of designer sunnies), sipping fabulous champagne and mingling with the likes of Crystal Pollard, Shannon Brower, Allison Volk and PR extraordinaire Susan Friedman, I quickly realized my arsenal of frames was not up to par and made a note to myself to come again soon so as to get properly fitted for the most necessary of summer accessories. Now who would like to join me?! Insight Complete Eye Care is located at 8611 Hillcrest Avenue, Suite 102, Dallas. Sponsored by F|D Luxe, benefitting The American Foundation for the Blind and The Fashionistas.
F2 TALK with Stacy Girard
In our second F2 TALK of the spring semester, the FASHIONISTAS TWO were delighted to host Stacy Girard, editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Dallas. A Texas native, Girard is a graduate of TCU, having earned her degree in journalism. She now has the good fortune to uncover the most exciting, glamorous and philanthropic people and goings-on in our city – from luxury travel to fashion and everything chic in between. Girard spoke at length about her education, as well as her trials and triumphs working in the magazine publishing industry. Where did one of Dallas’s finest editors get her start? She cleverly launched a national publication titled Shuz, dedicated to the shoe-obsessed everywhere. When not attending a society function or making a personal appearance, Girard can be found combing the racks of vintage stores, checking out the latest contemporary art exhibit or walking her dog (a cutie named George Michael) along Turtle Creek. Sponsored by South Side on Lamar, Citizen Sweet and Modern Luxury. Benefitting the Fashionistas Two Scholarship Fund.
Shirin Askari Debut Fashion Show
Amid a cluster of models, hair and makeup team by Blanc, and headset-sporting producer Jan Strimple, with runway specialist Kate Wagner at her side, Shirin Askari’s Debut Fashion Show opened to great applause! A former fashion reality star (she is a veteran of Project Runway’s sixth season), Dallas native and former member of our F2 program, Askari chose to team up with THE FASHIONISTAS to present her Fall 2010 collection of feminine yet forward looks. The collection was full of chicly tailored wool outerwear and dresses made of organza, jersey and beautiful floor-sweeping silks, as well as Askari’s signature 40’s inspired headbands.
After all thirty looks marched down the runway, Askari took her finale walk to a standing ovation and flowers from her loving family. Spotted at the show: D’Andra Simmons, Yvonne Crum, Myra Walker, Jillian Prado, Nikki Trizza and of course team Fashionista – Heidi Dillon and Bri Crum. Look for Janet Fresquez (title sponsor) to soon be sporting Askari’s dress of white organza with black lace detailing; rumor has it she couldn’t stop beaming about it! You can find Askari’s current collection of apparel at Melanie Gayle, Elements and www.shirinaskaristore.com. Sponsored by Janet Fresquez, South Side on Lamar, Jan Strimple Productions, Betty Reiter, Blanc Hair Salon, Bella Restaurant and Russian Standard Vodka. Benefitting the Fashionistas Two Scholarship Fund.

Fashion Photography by Erik Madigan Heck/Acura ZDX Launch Party
|
Rachel Courts, Erik Madigan Heck and Heidi Dillon |
This chic driver-meets-fashion fete was the second of a seven-city tour featuring the sleek and sporty Acura ZDX and the works of renowned photographer Erik Madigan Heck. The exhibition showcased Heck’s photography as a way of communicating the artistic vision behind the luxurious four-door coupe. At just 26 years old, New York City–based Heck is already an established artist, having shot the collections of Valentino, Lacroix and Gaultier, just to name a few. Not to mention Heck’s day job as the editor-in-chief of Nomenus Quarterly, an online and print publication that features notable artists and fashion designers. Sponsored by Ovation TV, F|D Luxe, The Fashionistas and Studios 1019.
Luncheon with Pink Tartan Designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran
On March 25th, clad in a deep blue suit from her own line and envy-inducing Balenciaga heels, Pink Tartan designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran hosted a lunch for The Fashionistas at Neiman Marcus NorthPark. Mimran just happens to be one-half of Canada’s most powerful couple in fashion. Her husband, Joseph Mimran, is former owner and creator of the fashionable yet affordable Club Monaco stores. Mimran was in town to explain the inspiration behind her Spring 2010 line of fashionable yet sophisticated sportswear through a beautiful video of the Pink Tartan runway show and Mimran’s palatial home, as well as fashion plates who have been spotted sporting Pink Tartan around town – Kate Hudson and Kim Cattrall, just to name a few. We were then treated to a delightful lunch and fashion presentation of all the latest Pink Tartan looks. Kimberley’s take on fashion design is very unique in that she cares so much for the integrity in the fabrication of each of her garments. How to spot a Pink Tartan design? Look for the monogrammed PT inside blazers, hidden pink lining underneath blouse collars, and Joseph’s Pink Tartan signature discreetly placed within their colorfully printed wrap dresses. Sponsored by Pink Tartan and Neiman Marcus NorthPark.
F2 TALK with Erin Patton
“The best way to predict the future is to create it,” says mega branding expert Erin Patton. We had the honor of hosting Patton at our March 29th F2 TALK, where he spoke about urban branding, sports marketing and the Hip-Hop culture. Patton was handpicked by Michael Jordan to launch Nike’s famed Jordan brand, which eventually grew to over $350 million in global revenues. After the lecture and Q&A, Patton signed copies of his book “Under The Influence,” which provides a front-row perspective on how to grow the urban-youth-inspired market. As a staunch advocate for higher education, Patton now serves as adjunct professor of sports marketing at SMU Cox School of Business. For more information about Patton, please visit www.undertheinfluence2009.com Sponsored by South Side on Lamar, benefitting the Fashionistas Two Scholarship Fund.

Upcoming events
Designing with a Vision
We are pleased to be a part of the American Foundation for the Blind’s Center on Vision Loss 2010 “Designing with a Vision” two-day event, beginning Friday, April 16th. Blind Ukrainian haute couture designer Sergey Ermakov (he can only see 5% of what you see) will make his Dallas (as well as stateside) debut to host two runway shows and a master class, with the focus to be on living successfully with vision loss. He will also design and donate a couture dress (worth well over $10,000) for a chance raffle at the nighttime event.
The first day will include a “Blintz & Bellini” bruncheon show and trunk show, wrapping up with a nighttime runway show with 30 dramatically stunning looks as well as cocktails and dancing afterward. The second day, Saturday, April 17th, will consist of the F2 TALK master class taught by Sergey himself where he will deconstruct a couture dress. Major sponsors: The Fairmont Hotel, Modern Luxury Magazine Dallas, American Airlines, Essilor of America, Oncor, Inc., Nokia and DVA Navion. Proceeds to benefit the AFB and THE FASHIONISTAS.
Tickets for the Friday runway show and after-party from 6:30pm – 11pm are $50 per person and can be purchased at www.afb.org/DWVtickets. Tickets for the Saturday F2 TALK from 10am – 12pm are $15 per person and can be purchased at the door. Both nighttime runway show and F2 TALK to be held at The Fairmont, Dallas. For more information, please contact Bri Crum at bri.crum@thefashionistas.org
Artemide – An Evening Celebrating Design
Artemide’s contemporary light has never been solely about function. Instead, for over forty years this light design company has proposed light as a source of visual pleasure. Come April 29th, we will be celebrating an evening of Italian design with not only Artemide, but a slew of fashionable Italian finds up for silent auction. Maserati will be auctioning a weekend in a convertible (perfect weather for it), Bella will have a dinner for two up for grabs, Oscar Fierro will have a few over-the-top fashion confections up for bidding – and an Artemide logico table lamp could be chicly placed in your home for the right price; all proceeds to benefit the Fashionistas Two Scholarship Fund, of course. This is an event to see and be seen, and I don’t say that lightly! To be held at Artemide, 1617 Hi Line Drive, Dallas from 7pm – 9pm. Sponsored by Veev Vodka, Southern Charm Catering, Uptown Sound, Maserati, Oscar Fierro and PaperCity. For more information, please contact Rachel Courts at Rachel.Courts@thefashionsitas.org
Savor the Arts
TreAmici Prime Steakhouse & Seafood will launch their second Savor the Arts event on May 13th. TreAmici held their first quarterly art, food and philanthropy fete last year with the aim of celebrating Chef Chris Hughes’ culinary talents, as well as giving back to the community by showcasing the arts and donating the proceeds to a featured charity (The Fashionistas are lucky enough to the beneficiary this go round). TreAmici General Manager Ken Branstetter shares, “We look forward to the second Savor the Arts, as we discovered through our first event that our passion for fine cuisine and the arts proves successful for local philanthropies.”
Plan to view artwork by local artists such as Emil Cerullo, George Fowler and Michelle Miller throughout the dining room and bar, as well as within a silent auction, which guests can bid on all evening. Bryan Embry, owner of Ross/Akard Gallery, will serve as curator. Dynamic British pianist Adrian King, who has toured with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, is set to perform. Complimentary wine reception to be held from 5pm – 7pm, dinner can be enjoyed from 7pm – 11pm. TreAmici is located at 18020 North Dallas Parkway, Dallas. Please contact Bri Crum for more information at bri.crum@thefashionistas.org or make your reservations at 972.250.4400.

Fabulous Fashionistas
Tia Cibani, Creative Director of Ports 1961
by Rachel Courts
 |
Spring 2010 Ports 1961 |
Tia Cibani is a globe-trotting Fashionista. Born in North Africa and raised in Vancouver, the Creative Director of Ports 1961 continues the pattern and turns her contemporary collections’ inspiration into a global affair, be it India, Scotland or the Pacific Northwest. This spring, it’s no different; titled Fluere, the collection is based on “traditional Japanese fashions with a 1930’s couture element.”
Meeting Cibani just off of Fall 2010 New York Fashion week, she explains, “It is quite exciting for others and very busy for myself. After, I usually feel sick and need a full week to recover.” Lucky for us we were able to mix and mingle with her a few days after her downtime ended, when she could not wait to talk to us about her Spring collection currently for purchase at Nordstrom. With organza coats, beautifully draped cocktail dresses and a palette of shimmery pinks, cream and gold, she has definitely achieved the “romanticism” she was aiming for.
Though this season’s clothing is inspired by the old world, Cibani’s take on quirky accessories definitely meets the new world. From clear laminate belts to embossed leather clutches and patent leather brogues, the Creative Director plays homage to her current home, the urban landscape of New York City.
It is Tia Cibani’s modern yet functional take on global fashion that clearly defines the Ports 1961 customer, that of an ageless, multinational jetsetter. Now what woman wouldn’t want to play that part?

THE FASHIONISTAS BLOG

THE FASHIONISTAS BLOG |
There are countless fashion gossip, news and style blogs out there today. Fashion is one of the biggest industries in the world, and blogging about it has become one of the largest internet phenomenons. Many of our fashion peers get their information from blogs simply because they are constantly being updated with the latest in news and trends – much faster than the three-month lead time for most current fashion magazines.
We at THE FASHIONISTAS now have our own blog. Given that some of our city’s most talented and beloved fashion journalists are no longer with their published news outlets, we saw a definite hole in Dallas fashion coverage and took a leap which we hope you will follow.
We will be gaining inspiration from and blogging about fashion publications (local, national and international), the latest trends, fashion-related news, and seeing what is out there in the boutiques and what everyday people are sporting (Heidi’s favorite regular column is our “What They Are Wearing”).
Blogging about fashion takes a lot of time, energy and creativity. Although there is no shortage of the latter in The Fashionistas’ offices, we do not always have the time to commit to several blog posts a day – as you know, we prioritize hosting FASHION TALK, F2 TALK, designer fashion shows and (phew) much more. Please be patient with us, as we are definitely considered virgin bloggers!
