Hello Fashionistas,
I must confess that when I started The Fashionistas, I had no idea that we would be where we are today. How do you prevail upon a city, albeit a fashionable city, to rise up and embrace an organization that all about fashion? To this day, even with over 2000 members, I wonder if we really can.
Incredibly, thanks to the concerted efforts of our Board of Directors, Limelight Group Board and F2 Leadership Board, we have initiated programs about which we are immensely proud. Bri Crum and her F2s are off to a magnificent start with the F2 TALK series. Project Runway star, Shirin Askari, dazzled the audience with her wit and charm, regaling us with tales of her experiences on the show. LimeLight and their intrepid leader, Kirby Allison, hit a home run with our Fashionistas' House Party - garnering praise from the surfeited Mr. Dallas himself. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Joyce Goss, her committee, our friends at FD Luxe and the Crow Collection of Asian for the superb job they did on orchestrating our Yeohlee: Design For Now gala. The evening was a triumph and one of the most elegant events that I have attended in some time. I would be remiss if I did not complement my dear friend Myra Walker for the superb job she did curating the show. The following evening over 200 people enjoyed hearing Yeohlee's riveting lecture about her architectural fashion designs.
Speaking of riveting, you won't want to miss the star-studded Dallas Rocks Gala which benefits Russell Simmon's Diamond Empowerment Fund. This marks the second year that The Fashionistas have partnered with D.E.F. There is a natural synergy between our two organizations as we are both squarely focused on educational initiatives.
I just received confirmation that in November we will be moving our day-to-day operations out of my kitchen and into a 1,100 sq. ft. office space at South Side on Lamar. In true Fashionistas style, we will celebrate this momentous occasion by hosting one of our infamous soirees.
Stay Fabulous,

YEOHLEE: DESIGN FOR NOW
The Margaret and Trammell Crow Collection of Asian Art October 3, 2009 – January 3, 2010 by Myra Walker, Curator/Director, the Texas Fashion Collection
Yeohlee Teng is a highly respected figure in New York fashion circles and beyond. Her designs are avidly collected by clients at home and abroad, who recognize her commitment to design innovation and integrity from creative process to end product. Concise and classic forms, with a rigorous sense of design, are hallmarks of Yeohlee’s distinctive work. YEOHLEE: Design For Now illuminates Yeohlee’s intellectual approach by showing carefully chosen examples of her work from 2004 to the present. The clothing in this exhibition makes clear how Yeohlee contemplates such disparate influences as architecture, travel, art, and culture during the development stage of her designs. Each season’s collection follows from parameters that she establishes at an early stage of the design process. These parameters ramify into a web of concepts that unify each new body of work. Four themes that are especially significant in Yeohlee's unique sense of design provide the synergistic organization for this exhibition: Fluid Geometry, Urban Nomad, Made in New York, and Zero Waste.
Director Amy Hofland of the Crow Collection of Asian Art approached Myra Walker in 2008 to curate a fashion exhibition that would keep in mind the mission of the Crow to exhibit Asian art, yet stimulate visitors to think about fashion. The Crow has steadily increased its exposure of Asian artists who are producing contemporary art, along with continuing to showcase the museum’s permanent collection. Amy was also conscious of the upcoming swirl of events around the fall 2009 opening of the AT&T Performing Arts Center, with the focus on two major architectural works making their debut in the Dallas Arts District.
Myra Walker was introduced to Yeohlee about ten years ago by Harold Koda, Curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She had subsequently visited Yeohlee's studio and taken fashion students to see her work. Suggesting Yeohlee for this exhibition also worked for Dallas, since her work has been represented by Betty Reiter for the past fifteen years. Reiter has a specific clientele who have consistently bought Yeohlee’s designs over time. Betty has a keen eye for design and her efforts have brought Yeohlee to Dallas for fashion show events.
The exhibition YEOHLEE: Design for Now covers a brief time period from 2004 to the present. In a way, the exhibition functions as a mini-retrospective of the past five years. It is a micro-view of a fashion designer whose work really is about design. Yeohlee is an artist who works in the medium of fashion. Her work is powerful enough to be exhibited along with the work of major architects. Dallas is the perfect location for this exhibition about Yeohlee at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.
WHAT'S NEW AT FASHION ON MAIN?
Painting the Town: 1920’s High Style October 9 – December 18, 2009 1901 Main St. Dallas, TX 75201 Hours: 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays
This is the third season of exhibitions at Fashion on Main. Keeping in mind that Dallas would be celebrating in the Arts District, this exhibition was conceived to highlight dressing up. Painting the Town: 1920’s High Style is a celebration of the pursuit of entertainment, whether it be out on the town, or entertaining friends at home. Elegant, rarely-displayed beaded and sequined flapper dresses and capes from the Texas Fashion Collection archives are presented, as well as evening dresses, coats, and opera capes. In addition, selections from the private collection of Caralee Biery Smith demonstrates the opulence and grandeur associated with night life in the 1920’s.
Unique hostess pantsuits from the personal wardrobe of 1920’s New York designer Regina Kobler exemplify the elegance and freedom women displayed while entertaining at home. In addition to Kobler’s pantsuits, newly-discovered historic images from her 1923 scrapbook of her designs are illustrated on the digital screen. These fashion images and garments were brought to the attention of Texas Fashion Collection Director Myra Walker by Richardson resident Inarose Bogen, Along with her sister, Sally Hardy of Oakland, CA, Kobler’s nieces lovingly preserved their favorite aunt’s designs and her legacy. There are some real fashion gems in Painting the Town: 1920’s High Style.
Spring 2010 will feature an exhibition about children’s wear. Fall 2010 is all about MEN……men’s fashion, of course!

F2 TALK with Designer Christopher Collins
On Tuesday, October 27th, THE FASHIONISTAS TWO will host our second F2 TALK with San Francisco-based designer Christopher Collins. While earning his degree in fashion design at San Francisco State University, Christopher worked as a visual merchandiser for Neiman Marcus where he gained insight into the luxury market. After years of designing evening wear under other designer names, Collins began his own Contemporary Couture collection with his lifetime friend, Erica Tanamachi. In Fall 2008, Christopher and Erica launched the much-anticipated first collection of the Christopher Collins line. www.christophercollinscollection.com Sponsored by Studio Movie Grill. To be held at Studio Movie Grill, 4505 Beltline Road, Dallas from 6:30pm – 8pm. Talk begins promptly at 7:00. $5 for F2’s | $10 for non-F2’s. Contact Bri Crum for more information, 214.577.2965. RSVP fashion@thefashionistas.org.
F2 TALK with fashion illustrator Chesley Mclaren
Please join us, November 6th, for our third F2 TALK with fashion illustrator Chesley Mclaren. Chesley initially began her career in fashion design, but eventually found fashion illustration to be her success story. Mclaren’s Francophile style of drawing garnered her praise and respect in the hard knock business of fashion, and before she knew it, Bendel’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf’s came a-calling for displays, painted windows and ad illustration. Finding happiness and notoriety in her drawing and later her books, Mclaren decided to give fashion design another shot. She now sells her whimsical collection, Demoiselle, in a chic dress shop on upper Madison Avenue. Chesley will be signing her books and as well as selling a special The Fashionistas sketch created specifically for our members. A percentage of all proceeds from the event will be donated to the F2 Scholarship Fund. To be held November 6th, at the 4th Wall Gallery, 2529 Fairmount Street, Dallas. From 4pm - 6pm.
DALLAS ROCKS Benefiting the Diamond Empowerment Fund
Following its successful launch in 2008 which honored Magic Johnson and Eva Longoria Parker, Dallas Rocks 2009: Diamond Dinner and Pave After-Party will be an exclusive benefit dinner and auction, followed by a festive after party to be held on Saturday, November 14th at Dallas’ Union Station. Proceeds will support the work of the Diamond Empowerment Fund™ (D.E.F.), a non-profit organization founded in 2007 to raise funds for programs that empower through education in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource. D.E.F.’s beneficiaries are CIDA City Campus located in Johannesburg, South Africa, and African Leadership Academy. Hosted by entrepreneur and philanthropist Russell Simmons, co-founder of D.E.F., along with special friends, Dallas Rocks will harness the compassionate energy of leaders of Dallas' social, sports and business sectors, as well as the international diamond and jewelry industries. For more information contact Ayaan Ahmed at ayaan@diamondempowerment.org.
Burberry and W magazine host author Frances Osborne
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 18th, as Frances Osborne will be ensconced in NorthPark’s Burberry boutique signing copies of her latest tome, The Bolter. Osborne’s book expands on a character, the Bolter, who was first mentioned in a novel by the author’s relative, acclaimed British novelist Nancy Mitford. The subject of the book is a mad cap woman named Lady Idina Sackville, who ran wild with affairs and was a five-time divorcee during the time between the World Wars. Full of British high society adultery and positively shocking (for the Edwardian era) behavior, Osborne (who happens to be Lady Idina’s great-granddaughter) proves that she like her long line of ancestral female writers before her can compose a beautifully written and quite entertaining tale. Hosted by Burberry, W magazine and The Fashionistas. To be held November 18th, NorthPark Center - Burberry boutique.

New Member Welcome Party at The House
Among the laundry list of fashionable fall parties, the annual The Fashionistas New Member Welcome Party hosted by the LimeLight Group is always a sure thing. Why? Behold the following formula: no seated dinner, no stuffy adults, just cocktails and hot young things mingling about poolside at The House, Dallas’ newest residential high-rise located in Victory Park. Kicking off the night, this year’s newest Fashionista members were invited to join us in the penthouse for a private cocktail hour where looks from Yeohlee’s latest fall collection (as well as a few of Heidi’s graphic couture dresses) were on display. Later in the evening, after moving downstairs to join the main party by the 150-ft pool overlooking a jaw-dropping view of the Dallas skyline, DJ Guillaume spun great music, bringing the party into full swing. Spotted in the crowd was la Fashionista herself Heidi Dillon wrapped in Herve Leger, Connie Dieb donning Balenciaga and Project Runway’s Shirin Askari wearing her own design. Beautiful people aside, the night offered a pleasing mix of fun and young socials all in good spirits, reveling in the energy of the coming fall season. Sponsored by The House, David Griffin Realtors, Belvedere Vodka, Moet Hennessey and Paper City.

Yeohlee Design for Now Gala
The Crow Collection of Asian Art along with The Fashionistas were thrilled to played humble hosts to renowned fashion designer Yeohlee Teng at a seated intimate dinner celebrating the opening of YEOHLEE: Design for Now. The night began with pre-dinner cocktails and a preview of the Myra Walker - curated exhibit, which focuses on 30 pieces based around four fashion design concepts – Fluid Geometry, Urban Nomad, Made in New York and Zero Waste - drawn from her 2004 to 2009 collections. The exhibit focuses on Yeohlee’s approach to design, which closely parallels architectural influences and modern fashion for the intelligent woman. The architecture-as-fashion inspired crowd, which included Yeohlee-clad chairwoman of the night Joyce Goss, moved from the exhibit across the sky bridge, which featured brilliant red squares of a deconstructed skirt installed overhead and on to the Asian-inspired feast that lay ahead. The night was filled with fabulous toasts, compliments all around to those who worked tirelessly on the exhibit and anticipation for the general public opening and the FASHION TALK lecture, both to be held the next evening. Sponsored by Park Place Maserati, Belvedere Vodka and FD Luxe.
FASHION TALK with designer Yeohlee Teng
The Fashionistas and our wonderful media sponsor F|D Luxe hosted the third lecture in our series titled FASHION TALK, with Malaysian-born, New York based designer Yeohlee Teng. The event drew a thinking woman’s crowd to the Dallas Museum of Art’s Horchow Auditorium to listen as Yeohlee spoke about her design influences, her passion about saving New York City’s famous garment district and her experience as an independent designer.
Heidi Dillon opened the evening by thanking all those involved in producing the exhibit and praised Tracy Anchor Hayes, Editor-in-Chief of F|D Luxe for her continued support of all things fashion. Myra Walker, curator of the exhibit then introduced Yeohlee who was delighted to have the first Dallas-based presentation of her architecturally influenced fashion designs married to the opening of the Arts District. Yeohlee is a woman who sees herself not as an international designer brand, but as a creative artist who designs for the postmodern consumer who relishes functional yet beautiful clothing that makes powerful impressions in various times, places and circumstances. After the lecture, Yeohlee fielded questions from the audience and signed copies of her book "Yeohlee: Work". The 200 or so guests then moved over to the Crow Collection of Asian Art to celebrate the public opening. DJ Jeff Mitchell from Phonobreaks Music spun great music while Kirby Allison, Jan Strimple, Gail Sachson and Dan Pritchett mixed and mingled among the Qing Dynasty jade artifacts. An inspiring and fabulous night was had by all. Sponsored by Park Place Maserati, Belvedere Vodka and FD Luxe.
F2 TALK with Shirin Askari
The Fashionistas Two were delighted and honored by the turnout at the kickoff of our F2 TALK lecture series with Project Runway’s Shirin Askari. Askari is a May 2008 graduate of the University of North Texas, earning her BA in fashion design. Shortly thereafter, she applied for Project Runway, sailed through the audition process and made the final cast. Shirin spoke about her desire to sew from a young age and her fashion design education, and chatted openly about her experience on Project Runway. Don’t be fooled by Askari's diminutive stature; she is a huge breath of fresh air in the overstuffed fashion reality TV genre. She spoke at length about the unexpected level of pressure and stress during the show’s competition and about her decision to base her design business out of Dallas as opposed to the hastiness of New York City. Though she couldn’t tell us if she makes the top three and shows her collection during New York fashion week, she did win the attentive audience over and left our student group excited about the rest of the Project Runway season to come. Sponsored by FD Luxe.

American Foundation for the Blind – The Visionaries Launch
The American Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1921, is the non-profit organization to which Helen Keller devoted her working life. On September 17th, AFB’s Dallas Center for Vision Loss held the launch party for their 21 to 49-year-old social group titled The Visionaries. The “I Wear My Sunglasses at Night” themed party was held at Dallas’s own W Hotel to raise awareness and recruit new members, as well a prelude to the key event next spring - Designing with a Vision. Dallas Rocks VIP Pre-Event Reception
On October 16th, The Fashionistas gathered to meet hip-hop and fashion mogul Russell Simmons and acclaimed film and television actor Terence Howard at Matthew Trent Jewelers for the kickoff of the Dallas Rocks Gala to be held November 14th, benefiting the Diamond Empowerment Fund. Simmons, co-host of the evening, gave a rousing speech reminding us all that Africa is still in desperate need of educational assistance with regard to the brutality of the diamond industry, which the organizations mission speaks to. The crowd then mixed and mingled to DJ Guillaume and talked rocks while sipping cocktails by Grey Goose Vodka. Diamond-studded highlights of the evening included - Heidi Dillon sporting the nights statement earrings, the $19,000 “Africa’s Hope” chandeliers to be auctioned off for the non-profit, and headline news announcements about former first daughters Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager receiving the Rising Star Empowerment Award for their work in Africa during the Nov. 14 Gala, as well as the Gala’s entertainer for the evening, legendary singer Smokey Robinson. SPRING 2010 RUNWAY TRENDS
by Sarah Lehman
Two distinctly different looks floated down the runways of Spring 2010 Fashion Week; one flirty and frivolous, the other practical and minimal.
Max Azria stunned critics with a minimalist approach to Spring 2010, a departure from the bandage-like binding and sex appeal. This collection was dramatically demure, using peek-a-boo cutouts (a Spring '10 trend) to expose minimal skin.
Marc Jacobs took Fall's 1980s glam rock look and ran with it full force, but that was sooooo 10 minutes ago and he claims he's tired of the black and the studs. His Spring 2010 circus-themed show was theatrically over the top (of course) showcasing Aladdin pants, hairstyles mimicking Broadway's The King and I, curlicue ruffles and Kabuki makeup.
Zac Posen's collection was more youthful and playful than previous ones. Usually creating dramatically draped, intricately detailed gowns ready for the Hollywood elite, Posen showed frocks with sassy cut-outs and flirty silhouettes.
Besides cut-outs, the other prevalent trend cascading down the runways was homage to Japan and the intricate art form of basket weaving. Veteran Carolina Herrera used luxe materials with surface detail created by weaving and embroidery. Surprisingly, Herrera lighted up her collection with younger-looking silhouettes and explored lengths such as thigh-high shorts and even a jumpsuit - GASP - with full cropped legs!
Rodarte had the most dramatic show. Described as "psychedelic" and "apocalyptic," critics praised this as the sisters' most fully realized collection yet. I love the rawness in the clothing and that theme came full circle with the mist on the runway and black grit scattered on stage. The clothes were ripped, shredded, aged, painted and basically all but destroyed. Sounds awful, but the result was beautiful! The clothes seemed to be painted on the body, with bold lines and graphic prints to blend with the tribal tattooed sleeves on the models' arms.
As we embrace Fall’s fierce, edgy look, Spring brings us lighter weather, colors and for fashion, sheer fabrics, color and shine and interesting new prints such as dip-dying, digitized images and bleeding florals. Talk about lightening up!

Accessories Designer Elaine Turner
by Rachel Courts
Texas native - Elaine Turner used her former apparel designer and merchandiser industry experience to create a market for luxurious accessories at an accessible price point. Inspired by great interior design, exotic travel and textiles with a timeless style, Elaine Turner handbags debuted in 2000 with much praise and acclaim. Her namesake store in Dallas’s own NorthPark Center is filled with great fashion books, colorful and fun clothing by designers such as TIBI, and Turner's own handbag and shoe designs. Elaine currently resides in Houston with her husband and two children.
Can you tell our members how you began your design business?
We began nine years ago; I was living and working in New York City and had met my husband there. I come from a family of entrepreneurs, and I had always known I wanted to start a fashion business. After making the decision to move back to Texas, my husband and I decided to launch an accessories business. We began with six prototypes that sold right away to our first customer, Tootsies.
How does being a native of Texas influence your design style?
The collection is very bold and I think Texas women are very bold. They are individualistic, they are not afraid of color, they are not afraid of pattern. It is culturally important in Texas to have a sense of fashion and I believe the customer will invest their money in great accessories.
How is your namesake store different from others?
It is all based on the DNA of the brand. We love fun products, we try not to take ourselves too seriously, and the designs are accessibly priced. At the end of the day, the Elaine Turner brand has a real person and identity behind it.
What trends did you touch on in the design of the Fall 2009 handbag collection?
Each season we look to a particular person or place for our design direction. We have a British feel to this season's collection. I love David Hicks’ interior design aesthetic and prints. That is really where we sought most of our inspiration.
Do you plan on adding jewelry and apparel to your label?
I think jewelry would be a natural design extension. We love the idea of instant gratification that accessories bring to the customer. We also love the idea of a table top/home accessory line. Whether it is jewelry or home accessories, you can mix both with your own innate style. On a different note, a lot of our wholesalers have asked us to do a swimwear line. Customers already love our colorful prints and beach handbags, so that may be a direction we venture into.
Is there a particular designer or brand you look up to?
I love Trina Turk’s Palm Springs aesthetic, her patterns and the cleanliness of her designs. I think Tory Burch has done a great job of launching the waspy '70s look. I admire Carolina Herrera and Diane von Furstenberg’s style. I tend to gravitate to designers who mix prints with solids and end up with a strong statement.
What advice can you give our F2s studying apparel and accessory design now?
Make sure that your passion translates into something that can really sell, something that can become a business. Also, do something good with your designs. Don’t isolate yourself as an artist. Turn your passion into an avenue that you can contribute to society with. In a business, you employ people, you get involved with charities; try to make your mark in a meaningful way.
What are your strongest skills as an accessories designer?
I work best with the conceptual vision, what we plan on communicating each season. What prints are strongest or what we should look to as inspiration for our designs. We watched a lot of "Mad Men" while designing our fall collection.
What is the one bag from your collection you seem to favor the most?
The cheetah Ella is a very chic and feminine satchel; the size is great as well as the pockets. The Kendall is a great workhorse tote. We always do a frame bag, something that is a little nostalgic. Not every bag in a woman’s closet should be a basic brown leather bag. Our goal is to invoke a sense of style with every design.
Elaine Turner is currently sold through her namesake boutique in NorthPark and in Nordstrom stores nation-wide, as well as online at www.elaineturner.com

OF THE MOMENT

Fashion From Home
The greatest gift the fashion gods could have possible bestowed upon me in the past few years has been the overwhelming resource of online fashion blogging, news and retail destinations. Not a day passes that I do not peruse my favorite websites for either fashion news or inspiration. Below is a categorized list of my daily hits.
Fashion News Websites
Fashionista.com – The site focuses on breaking fashion industry news and juicy gossip. They do wonderful things with graphic images and I love their weekly 10 questions for Project Runway column.
Style.com – The Conde Nast-owned website boasts almost a decade's worth of runway show photos and videos. They are the go-to site for trend reports, front row coverage and international fashion party pictures.
WWD.com – This online version of the fashion trade publication compiles the latest news from designer and department store sales figures to new and emerging fashion labels. This must-read will keep you apprised of the business side of the industry.
Fashion Inspiration Websites
JakandJil.com – This creation from fashion photographer Tommy Ton, now the official photographer for style.com’s Spring 2010 fashion month, focuses on the chic outfits of various fashion editors and models during fashion weeks. His favorite subjects appear to be the top fashion editors at French Vogue.
Atlantishome.com – Judy Aldridge, a Fashionista and the mother of Jane Aldridge, the blogger of seaofshoes.com, helms this daily picture blog. A long-time fashion industry participant as both a model and fashion designer, Judy has wonderful personal style that includes vintage favorites, cozy classics and Japanese-influenced avante garde pieces.
Whowhatwear.com – A daily updated online magazine, this website shows the latest fashion and beauty trends along with how-to videos and includes guest editors Nicole Richie and Agyness Deyn, who share their favorite fashionable necessities.
Fashion Retail Websites
Net-a-porter.com – This extremely well-curated selection of designer goods, which features most ready-to-wear collections and accessories, is my primary site for all of my go-for-broke fashion splurges.
Shopbop.com – Arguably the best resource for contemporary clothing, accessories, bags and shoes. Their inventory is so organized and vast that I find myself purchasing my favorite tees and a great party dress all in one swoop.
Topshop.com – The UK’s most famous high-street store online, featuring affordable and ultra chic items. My most recent purchases? Leather over-the-knee boots, platform suede booties, and a great sequined trophy jacket.
