Hi Fashionistas,

It’s hard to believe that after a year and a half of getting dressed up and drinking champagne, Fashion on Main is finally open!! How time flies. For those of you who missed the festivities, here’s what happened. I had to rush home from carpool and get my hair, makeup and dress on in record time to be downtown by 5:30, a very unfashionable time, but necessary to accommodate Mayor Laura Miller’s busy schedule. I arrived a little after 5:30 and was absolutely amazed to see that a large crowd had already gathered. By the time the Mayor arrived and we started our talks, there were about 300 people in the audience. Lee Jackson, Chancellor of the University of North Texas Systems, spoke, as did Robert Milnes, Dean of the School of Visual Arts, Myra Walker, Director and Curator of the Texas Fashion Collection, and of course the Mayor. I love her because the first thing she said was “I want Heidi’s shoes”. How many cities in the United States can boast a Mayor who appreciates a good pair of Pradas? Turns out the Mayor Miller’s dad moved to Dallas to go work for Neiman Marcus, so I guess shoes are in her blood. I gave a little speech and got really choked up at the end, you know how emotional I am, and then we cut the ribbon and opened the inaugural exhibition, Flights of Fancy. The show looked beautiful in our newly renovated space designed by Larry Leathers. Larry along with Kelly McCall and Ray Souders helped Myra install the exhibition. The clothes were amazing, especially the Roberto Cavailli centerpiece donated by our Fashion Goddess, Angie Barrett. Everyone swarmed into the 500 square foot room and oohhed and aahhed over the clothes.

In the meantime, the party was in full swing thanks to our fabulous co-chairs, Alonso Martinez, Tayler Sandvick, and Alvin Steffey. Not only did these three do a great job of planning the event, they all look like movie stars. Robyn Wise of Cymbidium came to the rescue at the final hour and provided a much needed pipe and drape to conceal the hideous vending machines in the lobby.

Many thanks to D Magazine and their really glamorous new publication, D Fashion, for throwing us such a fab party. This summer Myra and I got a call from Mary Poe, Marketing Director over at D, saying she, Ashlie McGill, Marketing Manager, and Stephanie Quadri, Fashion Editor, wanted to meet. I rode my bike up to the Starbucks on Knox, not knowing what they had in mind. Myra and I almost fell over when they told us that they wanted to sponsor the opening of Fashion on Main. They were getting ready to launch D Fashion and thought it would be great to celebrate the launch of these two monumental events on the same evening. Naturally, we thought it was a brilliant idea. In addition to paying for our party, D gave us two free advertising pages in D Fashion. Their generosity and support of The Fashionistas is really overwhelming.

If you missed the opening, you can view Flights of Fancy through December. The address is 1901 Main Street and the hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 11-6 and Friday 11-5. Admission is free and parking is available on the street (bring lots of quarters) in front of 1901 or in the parking garage located at the corner of Harwood and Main.

TIFFANY & CO. LAUNCH OF THE FRANK GEHRY COLLECTION

A lot of very exciting things happened this summer. Dorothy Mason, manager of Tiffany & Co., gave me a call to say that they were launching the Frank Gehry jewelry collection and wanted The Fashionistas to help celebrate. She said that we were the first group she thought of when she started to plan the party. Tiffany’s also invited Cattle Barons and the Junior League to the fete. I was thrilled beyond belief to be included with two of the most venerable organizations in Dallas. Anyway, about 500 people showed up at the Dallas Museum of Art on September 12 to drink champagne and view this extraordinary collection.

PORTS 1961

Tia Cribani, designer for the Ports 1961 collection was in town on August 26 along with Sara McClure and Joanne Pailey from Elle Magazine. They came down to do a presentation at the Shak, so I stopped by to meet Tia and the Elle girls and check out the really cute Ports collection. You won’t be surprised to learn that I did a little shopping while I was at it and came home with a great dress that Tia picked out for me. You can view the collection at www.ports1961.com

FASHIONISTAS2

OK, this is the cutest thing ever. This summer I launched a new group called Fashionistas2. It’s for the fashion-obsessed high school and college person and is headed up by board member Tayler Sandvick. Tayler is very young, dedicated and with it, so I know she’ll do a great job developing this important new group. So far we have people from Brooker T. Washington, Highland Park High School, Greenhill, Hockaday, and Bishop Lynch. We are in the processing of planning some cool events for the F2’s, so if you have a kid, who would like to join, let Tayler know. Membership is only $30. You can reach Tayler at taylercs@sbcglobal.net

NEW WEB SITE AND STATIONERY

The very talented Ricardo Fernandez has done an amazing job of designing our new web site and stationery. Ricardo also designed the Fashion on Main logo. He and Jason Sheeler worked closely with Terry McDonald from Baldwin Press to produce a really chic look for us. We really appreciate all the hard work these two board members have done.

NEWSLETTER

This really professional looking newsletter is brought to you by Max Trowbridge. Max also called me this summer to offer her services in the area of e-marketing. She is managing our group emails and helping us with our branding. Thanks Max!!

WARDROBE NYC

I would like you to meet my new friend Neva Linder. Neva is the owner of Wardrobe NYC, which is a company that rents out all the latest fashions to movie stars, stylists, and socialites. Neva flew into Dallas a couple of Saturday’s ago on her way back to NY after meeting with a Hollywood movie producer. We sat in my kitchen and ate smoked salmon and capers and decided to become partners of sorts. She has put us up on her website, which is viewed by celebrity types all over the world. Neva brought over a few pieces from her extensive collection of current and vintage finery. I tried on a silver Lacroix suit (retail value about $7,000!!) and a $15,000 Rick Owen’s suede and fur jacket. You can rent this stuff for a mere fraction of the cost. Renting clothes could really save you a lot of cash in the long run and then you would have a little extra for some nice jewelry, Frank Gehry maybe. Check out Neva’s web site: www.wardrobenyc.com or give her a call at 917-365-7099.

KEVIN CHARLES SALON

This Wednesday, October 11, the Kevin Charles Salon is celebrating it’s opening by throwing The Fashionistas a party. Festivities begin at 7:00 at 2222 McKinney Avenue, Suite 210. Speaking of celebrities, Kevin is the official hairdresser of the Academy Awards. Modern Luxury is the media sponsor and they have gone all out planning this event for us. Terri Provencal and her crew have put together a silent auction and Kevin is donating a percentage of all proceeds from each of his services through December. You can rsvp to 214-720-9200 or rsvpdallas@modernluxury.com.
