“If there were a Noble Prize for patience, Elizabeth Anyaa could win it.” – Holly Haber. For most designers creating designs begins with the fabric, for Elizabeth Anyaa it begins with laboriously felting her own material. Her highly skilled felting techniques combine silk chiffon, cotton organza and wool into exquisitely wearable, functional garments. These organic and elegant masterpieces will be featured on the runway at the bi-annual THE FASHIONISTAS Runway Series on September 24, 2011. The event will be hosted at the Trinity River Audubon where the natural vistas will be backdrop to Anyaa’s exquisite artistry and her unique formation, drape and coloration.
Anyaa’s unique perspective and creative designs are a culmination of her artistic passion and global travels. Born in West Africa, Anyaa began designing with found materials at the tender age of seven. It was during her youth spent in Sierra Leone, and later Ghana, that the colorful clouds, mountains, seascapes and textiles of West Africa captivated her. These inspirations continue to form her sense of color and composition.
Anyaa studied textile design in Finland. The Scandinavian nation, with its long history of textile development, was an ideal place for the designer to polish her skills in weaving, felting and surface design and to develop her artistic vision.
Anyaa moved to the United States in 1996 and because of her unique training and experiences she has been inspired to weave non-traditional materials into her textiles. Metal, leather, straw, plastic and other unexpected textures create eye catching three-dimensional masterpieces of wall art and home accessories. She employs the same techniques to produce creative and unique one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories. Her fashions have appeared in national and local magazines and newspapers including Women’s Wear Daily and the Dallas Morning News.

THE FASHIONISTAS are pleased to host Laurent Cotta as guest lecturer in the FASHION TALK Lecture Series. Laurent Cotta is an art and fashion historian. His most resent acclaim stems from his work on the “Madame Grès, Fashion Design”exhibition as part of the “Galliera Off-Site” program. Since 2002, Cotta has been responsible for contemporary creations at Galliera, the museum of fashion in Paris, France. Between 2003 and 2011, he has designed an exhibit at the Galleries Lafayette for the 60th birthday of ELLE magazine, mounted the exhibit “Gallierock – Jean-Charles de Castelbajac”, as well as an exhibit for the Grand Trianon Museum and the Bourdelle Museum.
Laurent
Cotta has also been regularly lecturing at l’École du Louvre since 2004, and in
2010 was responsible for a series of courses devoted to the history of
contemporary fashion. At the same time, he gives lectures on Yves Saint Laurent
at the Institut Français de la Mode [French Fashion Institute].
COTTA
& YSL
Cotta’s lecture for the FASHION TALK Lecture Series will celebrate 50 years of Yves Saint Laurent and the dichotomy of YSL’s aesthetic: classicism and transgression. Before the end of his career in 2002, Yves Saint-Laurent was certainly the last active couturier to have lived through the glory period of Parisian design in the 1950s and to maintain the same number of design studios and employees as in the hey-day of the ‘50s throughout his entire career. Recognized by Chanel as her heir, taking after a classicism inscribed in the French tradition, he offered an understated fashion which glorified the woman, gave her the assurance that she needed to assert herself.
From the start of his career, he rendered the concept of “Parisian elegance” obsolete, and replaced it by the idea of “seduction” which was more in line with the aspirations of women at the dawn of the 1960s. This form of seduction was all the more disconcerting in that he deliberately conceived of it as poisonous, as witnessed by his 1971 collection, inspired by the 1940s or Catherine Deneuve’s outfits in Belle de jour by Bunuel in 1967. Through his classics – the safari jacket, the tuxedo, see-through clothes – he accompanied women in their emancipation and fashioned a clothes-closet that is contemporary even to this day.
