Hi Fashionistas,
My son, Dallas, recently said to me, "Mom, I don't get all gaga when I meet famous people." It must be great to be so blasé. I, on the other hand, am not, and have spent the last month in a perpetual state of "gaga-ness".
Hamish Bowles, European Editor at Large for Vogue and Editor in Chief of Vogue Living, came to town to give a lecture on collecting couture clothing ( one of his passions) at the Meadows Museum, and be the guest of honor at a fund-raiser for The Fashionistas. Myra Walker picked him up at the airport and whisked him down to the Mansion on Turtle Creek for an intimate lunch with Joyce Goss and myself. I was a little nervous about meeting him because I figured he would be a bit pompous and arrogant, but nothing could have been further from the truth. He was absolutely charming and lovely and easy to talk to and I had a great time getting all the scoop on the Costume Institute's Party of the Year. After lunch, he went back to his room to freshen up and then off the Meadows Museum for his talk. It was a full house and the somewhat aggressive museum staff had to turn away over 50 people. The lecture started at 5:30 and people were lining up before 4:30! The party, sponsored by Paper City, Cymbidium, GREY GOOSE and Stanley Korshak, was scheduled to start at 7:00. Hamish was suffering from allergies, so he stopped at a drug store on his way to stock up on Claritin and arrived at Korshak fashionably late and was immediately accosted by our local paparazzi. Around 200 people packed into Korshak to meet Hamish, listen to the music by Shanghai 5, and to taste our signature cocktail, the GREY GOOSE Fashiontini. The next day, Rob Brinkley of Paper City, gave Hamish a tour of some of our architecturally significant homes. That evening Joyce Goss hosted a very chic dinner party for him at the home of Kenny Goss and George Michael. After dinner, Doss Alexander took him out to some of our more colorful establishments.

When you receive an invitation from Harold Koda, Curator in Charge at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, to come to a private tour of the Paul Poiret exhibition and to meet Nicholas Ghesquiere, Creative Director of Balenciaga, you do whatever you can to make it happen. I immediately made my plane and hotel reservations and pulled Dallas (a fashion aficionado) out of school. We arrived at our hotel in New York in just enough time to get ready and run up to the Met. Myra, who was in town with 20 of her fashion design students, met us at our hotel. Harold, who is the curator of the show along with Andrew Bolton, gave the tour to about 20-30 people who are members of the very exclusive Friends of the Costume Institute. It's exclusive because it costs $7,000 a year to be a member. Most of the pieces in the exhibition belonged to Poiret's wife, Denise, and could easily be worn today. After the tour, we went into another gallery for cocktails and met Nicholas. There were some Balenciaga pieces on display especially for this event, and Harold and Nicholas discussed the possibility that Paul Poiret influenced Cristobal Balenciaga. Myra, Dallas and I had a chance to chat with Nicholas who was cute and shy. They had given him a glass of champagne to loosen him up a bit, because he's not know for being a big talker.

My very first true love in the fifth grade was Paul McCartney. I saw the Beatles play when I was in the sixth grade in Minneapolis and cried through they entire concert. Paul's oldest daughter, Mary McCartney, was recently in town for the first U.S. showing of her photography at Goss Gallery. While, fortunately, I didn't cry when I met her, I couldn't help but stare into her eyes, which are exactly, like her father's. I have admired Mary's work for some time, particularly the series of Kate Moss wearing Stella McCartney pieces, but now that I have met Mary, I like her work even more. After the packed opening at Goss, I hosted a dinner party at my house for Mary and her boyfriend Simon. They both hung out and chatted like we were all old friends. Mary has two young boys and is a life-long vegetarian. Apparently her parents were very strict with the kids - they all went to public schools and had to earn their own money to buy their cars. Whatever Paul and Linda did, it worked.

My friend Neva Linder from Wardrobe NYC came to town with a stack of her designer duds that she rents out to celebrities and socialites for a fraction of the retail price. Everyone came over to my house to meet Neva and try on her Lacroix's, Herrera's, and a vintage Versace’s. Next time you have a gala or cocktail party to attend and you don't want to spend thousands for a dress just for one evening - call Neva. www.wardrobenyc.com. Neva hung out in Dallas for a few days and joined us at Art Ball, looking fabulous in a black Lacroix evening gown.

One of our adorable F2's, Amanda Taylor from SMU works at Dillard’s at NorthPark. She is an ambitions sort of girl and took it upon herself to put together a fashion show featuring the Contemporary Sportswear Collections at Dillard’s. Amanda invited 200 of her SMU sorority girlfriends for an afternoon of fun and fashion. Store manager, Brant Musgrave, was thrilled to have the store teaming with such a fashion-savvy group of girls. Rhonda Sargent Chambers produced the show using all the top Kim Dawson models. It was all about spring/summer trends and yours truly had the honor of being the emcee.
Every year the fashion design students at El Centro put on a show of their collections. This year our liaison at the college, Stephanie Cotti, invited Bill and me to attend, and, I must say, I was very impressed. The show was called Concrete Chic and featured work by fashion design freshmen and sophomores as well as theatrical costumes and makeup. Kevin Willoughby, who is on the faculty at El Centro, served as emcee. Keep you eye on Jock McMillan, Shaunte Humphrie, Nayra Soto, Angela Delarosa, David Quezada, Michele Valdez, Amalia Milla and Aiden Vo. There could be a rising star in the group!
Kelly Pruitt and Sheryl Duncan, owners of the uber-hip NorthPark boutique Sheke, threw a little party just for the F2's. F2's have been invited to some of our larger events for The Fashionistas, but this was their first exclusive event. Our F2 team, Christen Wilson, Tayler Carson Sandvick and Kristen Cone did a great job putting it all together. Here's a piece of advice - if you haven't purchased your swimsuit for this summer, run into Sheke. They have the most adorable collection of swimwear I have seen in some time. Many thanks to Kelly and Sheryl. |

Dr. Tina Alster is a world-famous dermatologist who works in Washington D.C. - buffing up the skin of political and television figures ( her client list is top secret). Dr. Alster is also a consultant for Lancôme and was in town recently to do a lesson on skin care at the Lancôme Boutique at NorthPark. She emphasized the importance of always putting a vitamin C lotion on your skin - like Lancôme’s Primordiale Cell Defense. Also, Tina couldn't stress enough the importance of a good sunscreen that has broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Those nasty rays even get you when you are sitting under an umbrella! Lancôme UV Expert 20 Sunscreen will do the trick, but remember to keep applying it throughout the day. Tina and I were discussing what a difficult time we both have remembering people’s names and I said I might not remember the name, but I will always remember the outfit. She said she always remembers the lesions.

Our friend, David Rodriguez, was in town for a trunk show of his exquisite fall collection at Kristen Radakovich's Linus Lounge. As you know, a portion of the sales benefits The Fashionistas. If you haven't been to Linus, you really need to check it out - 2724 Routh Street. Kristen carries brands that no one else in Dallas carries and she searches the globe to find them. It's always a pleasure to see David and my heart is still pounding because he said I could be his date for the CFDA awards next year! Nancy Klompus was responsible for putting this event together. You can check out David's work at www.davidrodriguez.net and Linus Lounge at www.linuslounge.com

I love meeting fashion designers and Nordstrom's couture manager, Donnalisa Haaheim indulged me by inviting me to lunch with Peter Som, who was here to show his fall collection. The day before the lunch I had a "procedure" which probably should have kept me in bed for a couple of days - but anything for fashion! Nobody seemed to mind that I was all black and blue and swollen and I had such a good time talking to Peter and Adrienne Hixon, Nordstrom’s store manager, that I didn't have time to notice how uncomfortable I was. Susan Chad was there covering the lunch for her new website Smart Snobs - www.smartsnobs.com.

Joyce Goss and Dr. Vinita Schroeder

Dr. Vinita Schroeder
Vinita's parents emigrated from India in the 1960's to pursue their education. Raised in Houston, Vinita always knew she wanted to be a doctor, but her initial interest in med school was Pediatrics. After a residency at Children's hospital, she became aware of the prevalence of asthma and allergies in children. She found the fact that these diseases were preventable all the more intriguing. During her medical fellowship she trained in medical dermatology, which overlaps with allergies. When she started her own practice in 1997, she shared an office with a plastic surgeon that eventually moved to a larger space. Dr. Schroeder's interest in the medical and aesthetic benefits of skin care prompted her to become educated on the latest and greatest treatments available. She met the world-famous dermatologist, Dr. Maurice Dray, through mutual friends in London. He invited her to Paris to study in his clinic, learned his procedures, talked to his patients, and eventually invited him to come to Dallas to work on our beautiful women. Other doctors around the country have begged him to come train them, but he only comes to Dallas.
Vinita met her husband Jim, a Neuro-radiologist, at med school. They have two boys, James and Sam who attend Greenhill. She still likes to volunteer her time at the Asthma and Allergy clinic at Children's Hospital and she is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UT Southwestern. Vinita always looks fabulous and confesses that she tries to fit time into her busy schedule to "power shop".

Joyce Goss
Joyce, one of the most fashionable women in Dallas, was reared in the small Texas town of Pleasanton, which is affectionally known as the "Birthplace of the Cowboy". Her love of fashion developed early - looking chic as homecoming princess, baton twirler, and Student Council officer. Joyce graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She worked in the residential mortgage business for 20 years and was a partner/owner of Summit Mortgage Corporation for 10 years. Currently, Joyce is the manager of Goss Gallery and a trustee for the Goss-Michael Foundation, which is a branch of the Platinum Trust.
Joyce and her husband Tim, a partner in Freese and Goss law firm, were married in 1990 in Las Hadas, Mexico. They have a daughter Greer, who also attends Greenhill School. Always the good mom, Joyce devotes a great deal of time volunteering at Greer's school. She recently co-chaired the Greenhill Auction and Book Fair and has been named the co-chair for the 2007 Family Place Palm Night. In addition, she has served on The Fashionistas Board of Directors for the past year.

Ruffian
I was over at Stanley Korshak for a meeting about our Hamish party and happened to run into Brian Wolk and Claude Morais, the designers of Ruffian, who were were in town for a trunk show of their Fall 2007 collection. Brian described the collection in the following way, "If Nan Kempner hung out with Bob Dylan in the West Village in the fifties, this is what she would've worn". After a brief inspection of the clothes, I could definitely see their point. The fabrics - polished wool, silk taffeta, buttery leather and sequins - give it all a couture feel, which is an interesting juxtaposition to the whole Dylan/West Village vibe, but it all works. You can check out the line at www.ruffian.com where you can also purchase a pair of fall's must-have shiny black tights.
